Head Coach - Llon Riley
Llon is a relatively new additional to MUNC joining the club in 2019. Currently, Llon is the coach of the 1st and 2nd Premier teams.
Llon has played, coached an umpired netball at a variety of levels over the last 9 years. More recently, he has focused on the high performance end of the sport. Since 2014 he has represented Qld and NSW in men’s and mixed netball. In 2019 was selected into the Australian 35 and over Men’s team. He is also the 2020 assistant coach for the Victorian Mixed Open team and a 2020 scholarship coach with Netball Victoria. To say he has a passion for netball is an understatement. However, Llon’s involvement in netball doesn’t end there – he is also a standing committee member of the NSW Men’s Netball Association, having served in that role for the past 4 years.
Outside of netball, Llon is a senior banking and finance lawyer in one of Australia’s leading law firms, specialising in financial regulation, product development and banking systems. In that role he works with national and international banks, credit providers, industry associations and governments. When not practicing law or playing netball, he can be found practicing his indoor skydiving skills.
Assistant Coach - Mark Dess
Mark’s interest in netball began when his daughter Felicity started playing Under 9’s. Unaware of the game previously Mark remembers asking his wife “what is it with this game? If the players breathe on each other it’s a penalty!” Soon after Mark was hooked taking it upon himself to gain a coaching and umpiring qualification and began coaching his daughter’s teams. Mark reminisces about when he gained a full appreciation of netball while watching the Phoenix and later the Vixens. He was fascinated by the first pre-game warm up he saw - the speed of ball movement was incredible. What makes netball an amazing sport can be summed up in two words - Sharelle McMahon.
Mark has been involved unofficially in MUNC since 2008 when daughter Felicity joined the club, rarely missing a game and become an ‘unofficial scorer’ for many seasons. Mark joined the coaching team in 2020 and is the coach of our 3rd Premier team and assists Llon with our other teams.
A GRADE COACHES
Head Coach - Maddie Selling
Like many players at MUNC, Maddie started playing netball at a young age in the country before moving to Melbourne to further her studies. She represented her region at the regional state league and state title competitions.
Maddie joined MUNC as a player and coach in 2018. She was an assistant coach to the Premier Division 1-5 teams, while playing in A grade herself. Her personality, knowledge and coaching persona impressed the MUNC committee and Maddie soon became the head coach of A Grade division 3/4 in 2019. She still currently holds the position in 2020 as well as assistant coach to A grade Open and Division 2 teams. Her biggest reward in coaching is seeing a player achieve a skill or goal they had been striving towards, as well as watching players progressively improve.
Assistant Coach - Ash Sidebottom
Ash started playing netball at the age of 8, but first fell in love with Netball when she was 6 years old while watching her mum and aunties play. Ash joined MUNC as a player in 2019 for the winter season, then the following spring season transitioned into a coaching position, currently Head Coach of A Open and A grade Division 2.
Ash has found a love for helping players develop skills, fitness and knowledge for netball whilst coaching. Ash loves the team work component of netball and the passion shared amongst players, coaches and spectators. One of Ash’s favourite parts of coaching is seeing the team implement skills practiced at training during match play.
